EOS Canon Digital Rebel XTI Camera – The Best Entry Level DSLR Under 00

Author: Ray Alind

If you have been using a point and shoot camera for many years, the jump to SLR photography can be a little daunting.   There are a couple of reasons for this.   Number one is the cost of SLR photography.  Typically, to get a nice camera and lens the cost can go upward to over 00.   If you have been using a point and shoot for many years, you might remember that they once cost quite a bit and have come down in price.   So too, have the digital SLR cameras.

The EOS Canon Digital Rebel Xti Camera specifically, and the Rebel line in general has been one of the most popular entry-level SLR cameras in recent years.   The XTi is known as an entry-level camera, but it out performs it’s entry-level stigma.  Noted for it’s excellent image quality and ease of use, it provides quality with a good value.

Staying under 00 should not be a problem with buying a body only or even the kit.   I have seen prices from 0 – 0 for the camera and on occasion the kit.   If you are comfortable with buying the body only, I would suggest a better lens then comes in the kit.   That lens is a 18-55mm.   One lens that would give you everyday versatility is the 17-85mm.  With that lens, you should be able to come in under the budget of 00.

Finding a good, everyday camera that let’s you do what you want in photography can be a time consuming search.   The EOS Canon Digital Rebel XTI camera offers an unbeatable combination of performance, ease-of-use and great value.

I have that camera, and a battery and charger came with it. I have never heard of a "new model". If he is calling it a camcorder, he doesn't know what he's talking about. I would call and talk to someone else. Sounds like they want to charge you for something that is supposed to come with the camera.

I've never heard of that company. Strange that their website doesn't say where they are located. Too bad you didn't order from Adorama or BHPhoto. Those are very reputable companies.

Here is some video documentation of my photo performance in November for Bushwick BETA Spaces. The piece uses three digital SLR cameras with their flash memory cards removed. It is still possible to take photos, but the resulting images can only be seen on the camera’s preview screen. They’re lost as soon as the next shot is taken.

    33. I have seen many IT resumes and I never understood why people list things that are completely unrelated to their field. Sure it’s neat that you can play guitar and if you feel so strongly about it that you simply **must** tell the hiring manager that you teach guitar lessons then bring it up during the interview but don’t list it on a resume. They’re supposed to be short because hiring managers read so many of them and it looks terribly unprofessional listing random tidbits about your life right below education and work experience. I knew this dude who, no joke, would go to a night club with a point-and-shoot camera and take pictures of drunk sluts then email him to his cousin who was the club’s webmaster who would upload them yet on his resume he listed this as “Web Photographer”. I’m sorry but if you’re applying for a Sys Admin job or some other technical position you just look like a conceited asshole bragging that you take pictures and there’s absolutely no reason to turn a resume into a facebook profile. I apologize if my comment offended you but I go into a silent rage when I see IT resumes that list technical skills right above something totally unrelated to anything of interest.

What is the best Digital SLR Camera for under $1000 US.?
I would like to get into photography as a profession, such as photo-journalism, travel-photography, stock-phtography, etc. Are there any sub-$1000 cameras that would be suitable for professionals? or would I have to spend A LOT more for a better camera?
I am talking about the camera and basic lens(es) that would come with it..I would add accessories as I need them, so the $1000 would not include everything, just a good basic setup to start out.

      • selina_555 says:

Any of the entry level DSLRs would keep you happy for a few years. I’d pick either Canon or Nikon. I have a LOT of contact with other photographers and time and time again it seems that either one of those are most likely to make their owners happy.

The most important part is to buy only the best lenses – camera bodies get upgraded, lenses stay with us.
You WILL regret buying cheap lenses.
Don’t rush into buying lenses. Start with a kit lens, get to know your camera, that lens, and all photographic principles.
Through time and through use, you will eventually KNOW what other lenses you’ll need/want.
The more time you’ll take, the less likely you are to regret your choices.

If you know anyone close to you with a camera, consider borrowing lenses and “picking their brain” about their camera and whatever else they know.

Go to a store and hold a few cameras, see how they feel to YOU.

Do lots of research before you buy, and start learning about photography, too.

Keep in mind that buying a DSLR isn’t cheap, even if you find a good deal for body and kit lens.

You’ll also want and/or need a few other things such as tripod, filters, a bag, sensor cleaning gear, a second battery, memory cards, perhaps a remote shutter release etc.

That’s just the small stuff – I can guarantee you that you’ll also want more and more lenses.
You’ll also want a decent flash some day.

See how that list just goes on and on?
Owning a DSLR isn’t cheap – at least not until you have built up a nice stash of gear.

        Just some food for thought……..

    37. DizzeeBee says:

The rule is sexist and luckily he doesn't have sexist parents like mine:

I think that you should question authority and think about why rules are in place. I just can't understand people who follow rules blindly and think anyone in a position of authority is automatically correct.

I think parents need to tell a child to stand up for things that are important and to do it in a polite respectful way, of course still will determination.

I personally might conform and cut my hair as I don't view it as that important and I four I probably wouldn't have an opinion on it. He must decide which he feels is more important, the friends at school or his hair. If he were older I might suggest he try to debate the rule at school or write a letter.

Independent thinking will sometimes lead to rebellion but that is not always a bad thing.

Nikon owners will tell you Nikon and Canon owners will tell you Canon.

Neither brand is best. You need to go to a camera store and hold a couple different cameras to see which is best for you.

It won't work on a 10D or full frame body.

Remember that, it won't change the next time you want a lens.

    50. penen says:

Why worry about others’ opinions on ergonomics? If a camera doesn’t feel great in your hands, that’s not going to change no matter how it feels for others. Go with what *you’re* comfortable with because you’re the one that’s going to be using it. I don’t know how Nikons compare in terms of settings changes, but the higher-tier Canons are more convenient than the Rebel line. Being able to scroll through things with two wheels and a joystick is a lot faster than just one wheel and buttons.

    51. soman says:

I have been using a Canon Eos Rebel XTi for about 5-6 months now. I loved my old Eos Elan 35, but must say I am thoroughly enjoying the XTi and think it has converted me to a digital fan. I was frustrated with the digital point and shoots, including a Nikon Coolpix which I bought after reading rave reviews. It replaced my old Casio digital which served me well, but was much like using a Kodak disposable 35 compared to the XTi. The Coolpix was even more frustrating, possibly because my expectations were high. The XTi was a huge leap from the point and shoots in my opinion and I feel like I have much more control, like in the “old days” but with so much more capability. I don't feel like the camera gets in the way when I am photographing subjects, which is a problem for me with the point and shoots. I no longer wish for the days with my first Pentax 35mm SLR, or later Minoltas (including an XE-7 which still works fine) or even my Eos Elan.

    52. allenski says:

Can anyone explain why the “ISO” setting exists on digital SLR cameras? It seems like this is an unnecessary holdover from film cameras.I ask this as an owner of a Canon Digital Rebel that knows very little about photography. What does changing the ISO setting get you that changing the exposure time or aperture wouldn’t?

    53. reset settings from the graphics option.

    54. zbigory says:

      > on a side note it wouldn’t be automatic door sensors because those work on motion, but a proximity sensor Heh, I was actually going to suggest it might be a low tech sensor like the sensor that allows autofocus on a point and shoot camera, but decided that mentioning another type of camera would just confuse matters. So I tried to think of something else that has the same type of sensor… and obviously I failed at that. :-)
